How to operate a Fire Pump and Fire Hose Reel

A Comprehensive Guide: How to Start and Operate a Fire Pump and Fire Hose Reel

Ensuring the safety of your property and its occupants is of utmost importance, and having a functional fire protection system is a crucial part of that. Fire pumps and fire hose reels play a vital role in quickly controlling and extinguishing fires. In this guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of starting and operating a fire pump and fire hose reel. Whether you’re a business owner or a homeowner, understanding these procedures can make all the difference in an emergency.

Step 1: Safety First

Before we delve into the operation of a fire pump and hose reel, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Make sure everyone nearby is aware of the emergency and evacuate the building if necessary. Ensure you are wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Locate the Fire Pump and Hose Reel

The first step is to identify the location of the fire pump and hose reel. Make sure the isolation valves to the pump are turned in the on position

Step 3: Starting the Fire Pump
The first step on a petrol powered fire pump is to turn the on/off switch to the on position. Turn the Fuel to the on position. Turn the choke to the on position and pull the pull cord. May need to adjust the throttle on slightly if it doesn’t keep running.

Once the pump has started turn the choke off and slowly adjust the throttle to full revs. Be sure to allow the pump to warm up prior to adjusting to full revs.

Step 4: Operating the Fire Hose Reel

Turn the valve on the fire hose reel on (in line with the pipe) This will allow the fire hose reel nozzle to be released. Point the nozzle in the direction of the fire and open the nozzle by twisting to the right. Fight the fire or wet down the area you are protecting.

Step 5: Shutting Down the Fire Hose Reel

To turn the fire hose reel off turn the nozzle to the left (opposite way of turning it on) then turn the pump off prior to packing up the hose reel.

Step 6: Turning Off the Fire Pump

Make your way to the pump once the nozzle has been turned off. Lower the revs on the pump by turning the throttle down to the lowest position. Turn the on/off switch to the off position, this will stop the pump. Turn the Fuel to the off position. Then you can wind the hose reel up and position the nozzle in the valve holder. Then turn the valve off below the reel to lock the nozzle in the holder.

Step 7: Final Step

Refuel your pump to be ready for the next time you need to use your pump. If you have a cover, let the pump cool down prior to re fitting the cover.

Notes

1. It is always good to operate your pump at the start of fire season to make sure its in good working order. Make sure the fuel is fresh and the unit operates correctly. If not, make sure you get you get the pump serviced prior to needing it.

2. Make sure you have a fire plan for your family. Don’t plan on the day, make a plan for several scenarios prior to needing to implement the plan.

3. Train other family members on how to operate the fire equipment incase you’re not available.
